The official state language of Moldova is Romanian, which is the native language of 78.6% of the population (as of the 2014 Census); it is also spoken as a primary language by other ethnic minorities. Gagauz, Russian, and Ukrainian languages are granted official regional status in Gagauzia and/or Transnistria.

There is a significant controversy over whether Moldova's official language should be called "Romanian" or "Moldovan". The former is named in the Declaration of Independence of Moldova, and is supported by the country's Academy of Sciences and Constitutional Court. The latter is named by a 1989 law of the then-Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, as well as in the 1994 Constitution of Moldova.
